The RBI's circular in April 2018 had directed payment system operators to store data locally, leading to concerns over data privacy and security. The CASC's case against WhatsApp Payments is centered around this issue, with the organization arguing that the service poses a threat to user data.

As the Supreme Court deliberates on the matter, it remains to be seen whether WhatsApp will be able to overcome these challenges and successfully launch its payments service in India.
